Living in Latin America—My Trip to Brazil Changed My Life
One year after my trip to Brazil in 1994 I moved to Ecuador. I also lived briefly in Panama and made Mexico my permanent home in 2018. Additionally, I’ve travelled numerous times to back to Brazil, Colombia, Guatemala, Roatán Honduras and Venezuela. My non-Latin trips include Spain, the Philippines, and Hong Kong. I’ve called Mexico home since 2018.
Living in Latin America Has Changed My Life
My first taste of living in Latin America started way back in 1994 in Recife, Brazil. I lived with a family for 3 months and studied Portuguese at the University of Pernambuco. It opened my eyes to a whole new world. It was undoubtedly the most memorable experience of my life. I craved more of it. The next year, in 1995 I got married to an Ecuadorian I met at the University of South Carolina and moved from the US to Guayaquil, Ecuador. The following year my daughter was born. For sure, living in Latin America isn’t for everyone, but for many, including myself, it’s an area of the world filled with adventure and intrigue. Additionally, living in Latin America typically has a lower cost of living than the United States, Canada and western Europe.
